How to register a birth

United Kingdom Consular Officers can register births or assist in having births registered. In Denmark the Register of Births is kept by H M Consul at the British Embassy, Kastelsvej 36-40, 2100 Copenhagen Ø.

In general, it is strongly recommended that the births of British children taking place abroad are registered. The benefits of applying for a consular birth registration are:

·        An entry will be made in the birth register held by the British Embassy in Copenhagen.
·        You will be provided with a British style birth certificate.
·        A record of the birth will be held by the General Register Office in the UK.

Consular birth registration is not a legal requirement and as long as the child is eligible they will be able to obtain a British passport without the British style birth certificate. However it is recommended for the reasons mentioned above.

WHICH BIRTHS MAY BE REGISTERED?

a.  The birth of a child born abroad, whether legitimate or illegitimate, after 1 January 1983 provided one of the parents (in the case of an illegitimate child, the mother) is a British citizen by birth, naturalisation, registration or adoption in the United Kingdom, or a British Overseas Territories citizen by birth, naturalisation or registration in a dependent territory.

b.  The birth of a child born abroad before 1 January 1983 provided the child was born legitimate, in a marriage recognised as valid in English law, and at the time of the child’s birth the father was a citizen of the United Kingdom and Colonies by birth, naturalisation, registration or adoption.

c.  The birth of a child born illegitimately abroad after 1 July 2006 to a father who is a British citizen by birth, naturalisation, registration or adoption in the United Kingdom, or a British Overseas Territories citizen by birth, naturalisation or registration in a dependent territory.

Declarations of paternity are required from both parents of illegitimate children born in Denmark to British fathers before the birth can be registered.

A separate application is necessary for each birth registered. In the case of multiple births, the exact time of birth of each child is required.

If you or your wife/husband is unable to call at the Consular Section in Copenhagen during office hours, the attached application, when completed (in block capitals or typed), dated and signed, should be sent to the Consular Section with the appropriate fee and the following documents: (photocopies of documents are not acceptable).

-         The child’s Danish birth certificate;

-         Parents’ British birth certificates (long version) or proof of claim to citizenship, e.g. Certificate of Naturalisation or Certificate of Registration;

-         Parents’ marriage certificate;

-         Documents of termination of any previous marriage. (Documents in any language but English or Danish must be accompanied by certified translations into English).

Births of children who are Commonwealth citizens but NOT British citizens cannot be registered at the British Embassy. Parents are advised to apply to the nearest representative of the Commonwealth country concerned.

FEES AND POSTAGE

The fee is DKK 835.00 for registration and DKK 540.00 for each certified copy issued at the time of registration.

If the documents are to be returned by post please send DKK 80.00 to cover the registered postage or an addressed and stamped envelope.

Only cheques and postal drafts (‘postanvisning’) for the exact amount can be accepted with applications or payments by Visa or Mastercards (the relevant form is available from our website Upload Credit Card Authorisation Slip).  Please do not send cash

DECLARATIONS OF PATERNITY

It is a requirement that declarations of paternity are made by both parents before the birth of an illegitimate child of a British father can be registered. Such declarations will be prepared when all original documents have been handed in to the Embassy and an appointment will be given. If applicants reside outside the Copenhagen area, the declarations can be made at one of the Honorary Consulates situated elsewhere in Denmark. There is a separate fee for this service.

DANISH BIRTH CERTIFICATES

Under the Danish registration system, Danish birth certificates give the place of registration of the birth but not the child’s actual place of birth.

British regulations governing the Consular registration of the birth of child require that birth certificates must give the place of birth. Registration cannot be undertaken without this information.

You are advised to ask the office of issue either to give you a transcript from the birth register, (a personal or written application must be made), giving the actual place of birth with the full postal address or, to record the information on the back of the original certificate and verify the endorsement with an official signature.
